Perks to a Small College Town: Gettysburg, PA

By Elizabeth Hilfrank on February 26, 2017

While all the hustle and bustle of a big city may be intriguing to some, there’s no denying that a small town has its perks for the college life. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, home to not only some important historical moments, but also to Gettysburg College, provides the perfect chance to thrive both on and off campus for many reasons:

1. Cost

Being in college is expensive enough — why spend more off campus?

•Housing – Gettysburg College guarantees housing for all four years, but even if you do want to live off campus, renting a big house in town will always be significantly less expensive than buying a tiny apartment in the downtown of a city.

Transportation – Gettysburg didn’t even have Uber until this year because it was not needed. Everything you need is within walking distance, and, even if you do need to go somewhere, the good ole’ Freedom Transit will take you for free.

Food – Less options = less temptation. And when you do splurge, the food is better than what chains offer for an equivalent price.

2. A town that understands

Because it’s a small town, the college makes up a huge part of the area. So, the locals get you. Businesses cater their schedules around the college timeline, and many bars and restaurants have specials just for students (Thursday night=College night!). Locals also tend to be really supportive of any college events taking place (Relay for Life, sports, etc.).

3. Homestyle vibes

Small towns tend to have a more homey feel, which is just what you need some days. They offer the perfect place for homestyle meals and homemade ice cream.

4. Nature

It’s not all cement in a small town! With Gettysburg’s endless battlefields, there’s always a new place to go for a walk, run or just to watch the sunset. You can breathe the air without sucking in gas fumes, and you can see the stars at night.

5. Reality

Let’s be honest, if you really love college, you’re not going to want to leave campus. A small town offers the perfect balance for when your parents come to visit and need places to stay and eat, while also affirming that the college will give you everything you need, and more so that you rarely have to leave.
